Good Food/Bad Food: the great weight debate

After reading all five articles and watching the documentary Fathead, you have become more aware of the debate over the weight struggles of many Americans, which some have labeled as an "obesity epidemic." Based on the research and information from these sources, should the government have a say in our diets?

Part 1: Argue two aspects of this issue (2 BP's), using at least TWO properly documented pieces of evidence from the reviewed sources for each sub-claim.

Part 2: Explain one argument of the other side's point of view, identifying at least TWO pieces of evidence THEY employ, properly documented, why they think this supports their point, and discuss the flaws and shortcomings of this argument.

We have the freedom to choose what we eat - so let’s savour it

We have the freedom to choose what we eat - so let’s savour it

The Child Poverty Action Group's belief that poor equals fat is nonsense

What did you have for breakfast? I bet you didn’t know that you had little choice in the matter. At least Imran Hussain, of the Child Poverty Action Group, seems to think so. When the public health minister, Anna Soubry, pointed out that there are too many obese people, he agreed, but angrily: “Rather than blaming parents, ministers should look at the piles of evidence that make it absolutely clear that the real reason why our obesity problem is going to get bigger in the years ahead is because our child poverty problem is going to get much bigger as a result of the Government’s own policies.”
We’ll come back to Mr Hussain, because his words are worth savouring.
A central problem of existence is the wriggling attempt made by each of us to determine the limits of our autonomy. How “free” are we to choose our path through life? It’s at the heart of our politics: what is taxation, but a surrogate for the chains that bind us each to the other? They may be chains forged of love (aka “social justice”), but they restrict movement, nonetheless. No man is an island.
The same problem in the emotional sphere lies behind at least two entire industries: daytime television (“I wanted to be a good father, but in the end I had to be free to be me”), and self-help books (“You don’t have a choice over work colleagues’ behaviour; but you do have a choice in how you respond!” is the useless advice offered by these mantras of “empowerment”, a particularly ghastly anti-word used to beat down wage slaves).
Nearly every decision we make is constrained by consideration of its effect on others; and our reasoning up to the point of that decision will be similarly affected by all the other decisions made before. There may be no such thing as free will.
This connectivity is the species’ strength (love thy neighbour; do unto others…) but it can also be the individual’s tragedy. The older we become, the fewer degrees of freedom are available to us, the more we yearn for some independence. The Left’s moral fury at the Right’s dislike of taxation is based on a fundamental misreading of human nature: what they see as greed, we see as an important battle in the endless fight between freedom and order, between chaos and control.
Of course, a Leftist would argue, money drives autonomy, so just give more of it to the poor. Mr Hussain’s words mark the end point of such reasoning, the elevation of statistical correlation into natural law; he implicitly suggests that you don’t have control over what you choose to eat. That more poor people are obese is in itself held as proof of this law: there are “piles of evidence”, he says, that poverty drives fatness (relative poverty, presumably: I doubt Comic Relief will be raising money in order to establish branches of Weight Watchers in Africa).
And since we’re all connected to one another, the corollary is that it’s your fault when your neighbour gets fat, so you should be made poorer (through taxation) in order both to give the neighbour money (so that he will become thin, the converse of the poverty equals fat law) as well as to assuage your moral guilt. (Of course, the same law implies that you will become fatter, as taxation makes you poorer; thank heavens for the longevity of lobby groups.)
I reject Mr Hussain’s arguments for the superficial political reasons alone – his text is a prime example of the special pleading by politicised lobbyists which dominates programmes such as Today on Radio 4: “Here is a Bad Thing which my group exists to defeat, through policies that require public expenditure. So if you don’t support increased spending, then you are a Bad Person.”
But a more profound reason to reject Mr Hussain’s argument over diet, more important than rejection of the Left’s simplistic “Only public spending is morally good” approach, is existential. None of us is completely free: about that both Left and Right agree. It is therefore important to cherish those decisions which are available to us, if only in order to give ourselves the resilience required to get up in the morning and endure the hours of workplace slavery, where no action is determined by the self alone (because we’re “empowered” to do as we’re told). Degrees of freedom matter, and shutting off the choices that are available is an unnecessary victory for order over freedom.
And surely one act over which we relatively prosperous Britons have complete control is one of the most fundamentally important choices available to the human animal: that of deciding what we put into our mouths, and eat. If the relatively poor are choosing to eat worse diets, on average, then it’s worth wondering why, but only up to a point; the point being where we patronisingly recast individuals as mere actors of the statistical poor-equals-fat law.
The existentialists were right: you are what you eat. Not only that. it is you who decides what to eat, so it is you who decides who you are. Cherish that freedom, and break Mr Hussain’s law.
